Lima → Cusco → Machu Picchu → Bogotá → Cartagena
"Peru's Inca highlands paired with Colombia's coffee, coast and warmth."
Two of South America's most rewarding countries, sequenced so you acclimatise to altitude before you need it and end on a Caribbean breeze. Lima alone justifies the flight; Machu Picchu and Cartagena seal it.
Best season
May–September (Peru dry season; Colombia good year-round)
Budget
$110–160 per person per day
Pace
Balanced — altitude forces you to slow down
Best for
Curious eaters, history travellers, couples after warmth and contrast

Days 1–3

World-class food capital. Miraflores cliffs, Barranco bars, a serious ceviche tour. Sleep at sea level before the highlands.
Days 4–9

Acclimatise in Cusco for two days, then Pisac and Ollantaytambo. Machu Picchu by train, or the 4-day Inca Trail if you booked six months ahead.
Side trip

Pre-dawn pickup from Cusco, three-hour drive, then a 90-minute hike to 5,200m for the striped mineral bands. Brutal at altitude — only attempt after at least four nights of acclimatisation. Add the Red Valley loop on the descent.
Days 10–14

Fly to Bogotá. Old town and Gold Museum, then Salento for coffee farms and the Cocora Valley wax palms.
Days 15–21

Medellín for the transformation story and Comuna 13 cable cars. Finish on the Caribbean in Cartagena.
