Adventure
Check #TableMountain cam before you go — fog kills the view.
Book through a reputable operator, double-check insurance covers the activity, and don't underestimate how tired you'll be after — schedule something easy the following morning.
About 4 hours is realistic with photos, breaks, and a sit-down somewhere nearby. Easy to slot beside one other activity. Based in Cape Town. Map it before you leave the hotel so you arrive from the right side of the entrance.

1-hour up; do it on a full-moon evening with a head torch.

This is one to do hungry and unhurried. Cash helps at smaller counters, English menus aren't guaranteed, and the best stalls tend to sell out long before closing time.

Best time to visit
Peak: Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, Sep, Oct, Nov, Dec
It's the southern hemisphere — November to March is summer (Cape Town beach weather), May to October is winter (great for safari since wildlife clusters at waterholes). Whale-watching off Hermanus runs June through November.
Right now (Jun)
Shoulder — average 18°C, expect whales.
Booking lead time
Kruger lodges and Cape winelands: 2–3 months ahead. Table Mountain cable car: same-day, but check wind.

Updated Apr 2026
South Africa works as a single country and a continent in miniature. Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world; the Garden Route delivers a classic two-week road trip; Kruger gives you Big Five safari at a fraction of East African prices. Wine country in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek deserves at least two days.
The rand is favourable for foreign visitors. Distances are big — internal flights save time.
Crime awareness in cities
Johannesburg in particular requires standard urban caution — don't walk after dark in the CBD, use Uber instead of street taxis, keep valuables out of sight. Cape Town and the Garden Route are far more relaxed but the same rules apply.
