Accommodation bases

Adventure

Table Mountain cable car

Cape Town4hCape Town

Check #TableMountain cam before you go — fog kills the view.

Book through a reputable operator, double-check insurance covers the activity, and don't underestimate how tired you'll be after — schedule something easy the following morning.

About 4 hours is realistic with photos, breaks, and a sit-down somewhere nearby. Easy to slot beside one other activity. Based in Cape Town. Map it before you leave the hotel so you arrive from the right side of the entrance.

Adventure

Lion's Head sunset hike

Cape Town3hCape Town

1-hour up; do it on a full-moon evening with a head torch.

Culture

V&A Waterfront + Robben Island

Ferry to Mandela's prison cell — book days ahead.

Expect a slower-paced stop where the value is in the story — bring a guide app or a paper map, and budget time to actually read the plaques rather than rush from photo to photo.

About 5 hours is realistic with photos, breaks, and a sit-down somewhere nearby. Easy to slot beside one other activity. Based in Cape Town. Map it before you leave the hotel so you arrive from the right side of the entrance.

Langa township cycle + jazz lunch

Locally-led tour through Cape Town's oldest township.

Food

Bo-Kaap walking tour + Cape Malay lunch

Cape Town3hCape Town

Painted houses, Muslim Quarter, traditional bobotie.

This is one to do hungry and unhurried. Cash helps at smaller counters, English menus aren't guaranteed, and the best stalls tend to sell out long before closing time.

When to go to South Africa

Peak: Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, Sep, Oct, Nov, Dec

It's the southern hemisphere — November to March is summer (Cape Town beach weather), May to October is winter (great for safari since wildlife clusters at waterholes). Whale-watching off Hermanus runs June through November.

About South Africa

Updated Apr 2026

A quick overview

South Africa works as a single country and a continent in miniature. Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world; the Garden Route delivers a classic two-week road trip; Kruger gives you Big Five safari at a fraction of East African prices. Wine country in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek deserves at least two days.

The rand is favourable for foreign visitors. Distances are big — internal flights save time.

Crime awareness in cities

Johannesburg in particular requires standard urban caution — don't walk after dark in the CBD, use Uber instead of street taxis, keep valuables out of sight. Cape Town and the Garden Route are far more relaxed but the same rules apply.
