Accommodation bases

Culture

Kathmandu Durbar Square + Thamel

Kathmandu4hKathmandu Valley

Old royal square + tourist hub for trek prep.

Expect a slower-paced stop where the value is in the story — bring a guide app or a paper map, and budget time to actually read the plaques rather than rush from photo to photo.

About 4 hours is realistic with photos, breaks, and a sit-down somewhere nearby. Easy to slot beside one other activity. Based in Kathmandu (Kathmandu Valley). Map it before you leave the hotel so you arrive from the right side of the entrance.

Culture

Boudhanath Stupa + monastery kora

Kathmandu3hKathmandu Valley

Walk the kora at dusk with the pilgrims.

Culture

Pashupatinath

Kathmandu3hKathmandu Valley

Hindu cremation ghats; intense, respectful viewing only.

Culture

Patan: Durbar Square + Golden Temple

Patan4hKathmandu Valley

Newar craftsmanship; metalwork workshops still operating.

Based in Patan (Kathmandu Valley). Map it before you leave the hotel so you arrive from the right side of the entrance.

Food

Newari momo + thakali set lunch

Kathmandu2hKathmandu Valley

Yangling for Tibetan-style steamed momos; Bhojan Griha for traditional Newari.

This is one to do hungry and unhurried. Cash helps at smaller counters, English menus aren't guaranteed, and the best stalls tend to sell out long before closing time.

Quick at around 2 hours — pair it with something close by to make the trip across town worthwhile. Based in Kathmandu (Kathmandu Valley). Map it before you leave the hotel so you arrive from the right side of the entrance.

Day trip

Bhaktapur Durbar Square day

Bhaktapur6hKathmandu Valley

Best-preserved medieval city in the valley.

Treat it as its own mini-itinerary. Lock in your return transport before you set off, and try not to cram a second stop on the same day unless distances are short.

Block out around 6 hours including transit. It eats most of a day, so don't try to pair it with another anchor stop. Based in Bhaktapur (Kathmandu Valley). Map it before you leave the hotel so you arrive from the right side of the entrance.

Adventure

Nagarkot sunrise (Himalayan view)

Nagarkot5hKathmandu Valley

Easy overnight; clear-day Everest view.

Book through a reputable operator, double-check insurance covers the activity, and don't underestimate how tired you'll be after — schedule something easy the following morning.

About 5 hours is realistic with photos, breaks, and a sit-down somewhere nearby. Easy to slot beside one other activity. Based in Nagarkot (Kathmandu Valley). Map it before you leave the hotel so you arrive from the right side of the entrance.

When to go to Nepal

Peak: Mar, Apr, Oct, Nov

October–November and March–April are Nepal's two trekking windows — clear mountain views, dry trails, teahouses open. Monsoon (June–September) makes the Himalayas largely invisible and trails dangerous. Winter (December–February) is fine in Kathmandu but high passes close.

About Nepal

Updated Apr 2026

A quick overview

Nepal is the trekking country, and the trekking is genuinely world-class — Everest Base Camp, the Annapurna Circuit, Langtang, and the easier Poon Hill loop all deliver mountain scenery that defies photographs. Even non-trekkers find Kathmandu and Pokhara worth a week.

Altitude is the planning constraint. Acclimatise properly; don't fly straight into Lukla and start climbing.
