Accommodation bases
Culture
Siq → Treasury → Monastery (800 steps, do it). 2-day pass if you can.
Expect a slower-paced stop where the value is in the story — bring a guide app or a paper map, and budget time to actually read the plaques rather than rush from photo to photo.
Block out around 9 hours including transit. It eats most of a day, so don't try to pair it with another anchor stop. Based in Petra (Southern Jordan). Map it before you leave the hotel so you arrive from the right side of the entrance.
Culture
Mon/Wed/Thu evenings. Treasury candlelit; touristy but unforgettable.
Expect a slower-paced stop where the value is in the story — bring a guide app or a paper map, and budget time to actually read the plaques rather than rush from photo to photo.
Quick at around 2 hours — pair it with something close by to make the trip across town worthwhile. Based in Petra (Southern Jordan). Map it before you leave the hotel so you arrive from the right side of the entrance.
Culture
Cliff-edge 12th-century fortress on the King's Highway between Petra and Dana.

About 3 hours is realistic with photos, breaks, and a sit-down somewhere nearby. Easy to slot beside one other activity. Based in Shobak (Southern Jordan). Map it before you leave the hotel so you arrive from the right side of the entrance.
Adventure
Avoids the main entry; arrives at the Monastery from above.
Book through a reputable operator, double-check insurance covers the activity, and don't underestimate how tired you'll be after — schedule something easy the following morning.

Adventure
Mars-red desert. Jeep tour, sunset on a dune, sleep in a bubble tent.

Plan on roughly 1 day here — it's a destination in its own right, not a half-day side trip. Based in Wadi Rum (Southern Jordan). Map it before you leave the hotel so you arrive from the right side of the entrance.
Beach
Cheap, warm, full of coral. Day boat from the marina.
Reef-safe sunscreen, water, and shade are non-negotiable. Mornings are calmer and clearer; afternoons get windier and busier almost everywhere.
About 5 hours is realistic with photos, breaks, and a sit-down somewhere nearby. Easy to slot beside one other activity. Based in Aqaba (Southern Jordan). Map it before you leave the hotel so you arrive from the right side of the entrance.
Best time to visit
Peak: Mar, Apr, May, Sep, Oct, Nov
March–May and October–November are when Petra and Wadi Rum are bearable — daytime warm, nights crisp, no sandstorms. Summer in Wadi Rum is genuinely punishing; winter nights in the desert drop below freezing.
Right now (Jun)
Avoid — average 33°C, expect hot.
Booking lead time
Petra by Night tickets and Wadi Rum overnight camps: 2+ weeks in shoulder, 4+ in March–April peak.

Updated Apr 2026
Jordan is small, safe, and packs a remarkable amount in: Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea, Roman ruins at Jerash, and the Red Sea snorkelling at Aqaba. A week covers it comfortably. The Jordan Pass (bought online before you arrive) bundles the visa fee with entry to Petra and 40+ other sites — almost always worth it.
People are famously hospitable. Mansaf (lamb on rice) is the national dish; refusing tea is mildly impolite.
