Accommodation bases

Culture

Forbidden City + Tiananmen

Beijing5hBeijing & North

Pre-book passport-linked tickets days ahead. South to north.

Expect a slower-paced stop where the value is in the story — bring a guide app or a paper map, and budget time to actually read the plaques rather than rush from photo to photo.

About 5 hours is realistic with photos, breaks, and a sit-down somewhere nearby. Easy to slot beside one other activity. Based in Beijing (Beijing & North). Map it before you leave the hotel so you arrive from the right side of the entrance.

Culture

Temple of Heaven + locals park

Beijing3hBeijing & North

Morning tai-chi, ribbon dancing, mahjong tables.

Adventure

Great Wall at Mutianyu

Beijing8hBeijing & North

Restored, dramatic, less crowded than Badaling. Toboggan down.

Book through a reputable operator, double-check insurance covers the activity, and don't underestimate how tired you'll be after — schedule something easy the following morning.

Block out around 8 hours including transit. It eats most of a day, so don't try to pair it with another anchor stop. Based in Beijing (Beijing & North). Map it before you leave the hotel so you arrive from the right side of the entrance.

Adventure

Great Wall: Jinshanling sunrise hike

Hebei12hBeijing & North

Wilder, partially restored. Overnight near the wall.

Nature

Summer Palace

Beijing4hBeijing & North

Imperial garden complex; rent a paddle boat on Kunming Lake.

Weather rewrites this one fast — check the forecast the morning you go, layer up, and carry more water than you think you'll need. Early starts dodge both crowds and afternoon heat.

About 4 hours is realistic with photos, breaks, and a sit-down somewhere nearby. Easy to slot beside one other activity. Based in Beijing (Beijing & North). Map it before you leave the hotel so you arrive from the right side of the entrance.

Food

Hutong rickshaw + Peking duck dinner

Beijing4hBeijing & North

Old alleyways by pedicab; Peking duck at Da Dong.

This is one to do hungry and unhurried. Cash helps at smaller counters, English menus aren't guaranteed, and the best stalls tend to sell out long before closing time.

Peak: Apr, May, Sep, Oct

April–May and September–October are the only months where weather, smog, and crowds align. Avoid Golden Week (Oct 1–7) and Chinese New Year — domestic travel triples. The Great Wall in autumn is the postcard you came for.

About China

Updated Apr 2026

A quick overview

China is enormous, ancient, and changes faster than any country in the world. Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai, and Chengdu form a classic two-week loop covering the Forbidden City, the Terracotta Army, the world's most futuristic skyline, and the pandas. High-speed rail (CRH) is genuinely world-leading — Beijing to Shanghai in 4.5 hours.

The single biggest planning shock for foreigners is the internet: Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and most Western news are blocked. Sort connectivity before you fly.

The Great Firewall is real

Google (search, Maps, Gmail), WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter, YouTube, and most Western news outlets are blocked nationwide. Install a paid VPN BEFORE you arrive — the App Store and Play Store filter VPN apps once your phone connects to a Chinese network.

Cash is dying

WeChat Pay and Alipay run almost everything. Both now accept foreign cards after a 2023 update — set them up before you land. Some smaller vendors no longer take physical cash.
